  1. Hi, again, The desktop version and the app are separate purchases. The integration is very smooth, so going back and forth is no problem. But the Mac app does things that the iPad app does not, because screen real estate and other things are more limited on the iPad. And the iPad app does a few things the Mac does not (mostly, it's a matter of presentation), although Steve Shepard, the developer, is gradually bringing those features to the Mac. For example, to define the custom fields I mentioned in the other post, you need the Mac version (I think that's still true; I use my iPad mostly for quick edits, but it was certainly true the last time I worked with sheets on the iPad). Changing style definitions is another Mac-only feature. If cost is an issue, and you don't mind dealing with the occasional software glitch and reporting what goes wrong, you could write to Steve about joining the beta program. I don't know if he's looking for new beta testers at the moment, but he may well be. Best, Marguerite
  2. Hi, Greenery, and welcome to the forums! The protagonist and antagonist sheets are just examples. Most of the templates include a couple of sample sheets, but not detailed examples. There are certain basic fields (height, build, age, etc.) predefined in the raw character sheet, but you can add custom fields and as much additional information as you want. The fields contain text, so you can write longer descriptions if you like. For example, my Russian novels have fields for patronymics as well as story-related fields like emotional makeup, internal/external goals, motivation, lessons learned, etc. You can also arrange the character sheets in folders. I write big fat historical novels too, so each one has a folder for primary characters, secondary characters, and characters who are part of the series but not present in the given book. And yes, Storyist is invaluable for keeping track of the crowds! I usually keep split the screen side-by-side, with a big text window in the middle for writing and a small window at the right displaying my character photos. Then, if I need to know whether this minor character's eyes were blue or brown, I can click on his/her photo, change the mode to text, read the answer, and get right back to what I was doing. Storyist is also useful for tracking settings and, although it doesn't have an integrated time line, I have used the plot point index cards to lay out the plot month by month (week by week, day by day) to get a quick rundown of where everyone is and what s/he is doing at a given moment.   4. Hi, Joe, and welcome to the forums! It's very easy to change the font style in Storyist, but I don't know of any way to have the same style display as font X in draft mode and font Y in page layout. You could set the Section Text, Section Separator, Chapter Title, and Header styles to your preferred font and just redefine them to Courier when you get ready to send the book out. So long as you have your project file selected, making Storyist the app of choice, you should be able to use the keyboard shortcuts to switch modes: Alt-Cmd-N for draft and Alt-Cmd-P for page layout.   5. Pip, Did you import your file from Scrivener, or did you create it in Storyist? If the latter (assuming you are using Storyist 3), you can click in the text window of the manuscript and change the stylesheet to Novel. Go to the Format menu, choose Style, then Change Stylesheet, then Novel Stylesheet. Tell Storyist how to match the styles (that is, Body Text to Section Text, etc.) and click Okay. Your file will take on the style definitions from the Novel Stylesheet, and you can adjust them as you like. This works with files opened from Scrivener, too, but you may have to change them piece by piece, which can be time-consuming. Less time consuming than cutting and pasting, though. Best, Marguerite
  6. At the risk of being the dumb kid on the block, if ch66 has Storyist on both iPad and Mac, why does he need to export at all? If the master copy is on Dropbox, can't he set it up to sync as a .story file and open it in both apps? That's what I do. Best, M
  7. On the iPad, tap 123 for the numeric keyboard, then tap and hold the " key. You'll get the option of guillemets as well as curly quotes. On the Mac, hold down the Option and \ keys simultaneously for « and Shift-Option-\ for ». You get used to it after a while, and you can type them really fast.   10. Hi, TattKttn, and welcome to the forums, I can only imagine how frustrated you feel right now. Obviously something is not working, and I don't know what to tell you—except that Mac/iPad synching is not only possible but usually seamless. I use Dropbox to sync between my Mac and iPad every time I work on my file. It took me a while to master the sync process, but since then, I have not lost my work. Storyist does rename files on the iPad to prevent losses under certain circumstances, so files can appear to lose changes even though they don't. But you should see those files on your iPad, named Ghost Story (TattKttn's iPad DATE) or something like that. I don't use iCloud because I haven't set it up and because for a while it didn't save older versions of the files like Dropbox, making it harder to recover from problems, so I can't help there. Steve Shepard will be along soon, no doubt, to help you figure out what's going wrong. This note is mostly so that you don't feel as if you're talking into the wind. If for some reason you don't get a response quickly, copy your message above and e-mail the support address, including information about which version of the Mac OS you're using.   11. Hi, Jeremy, Click on the name of your manuscript in the Project View. When it's dark blue (highlighted), click on the gear menu at bottom left. Choose Show Text File Outlines. You should be all set. Best, Marguerite
  12. Hi, Lerone, and welcome to the forums: Look at the top left corner of the window, below the menus but above the project outline. There is an icon that looks like a screen split horizontally and vertically, with a plus sign next to it. The split-screen icon should say View under it (and the plus sign should say Add), but depending on how you have set up the toolbar, it may not. Either way, click on the split-screen icon, and you will see the option to Show Project Trash. Select that option, and a window will open under the project outline with deleted files. Just drag any you need back into the project outline to restore them. Best, Marguerite
  13. It's a good question. On the Mac, you could set up a style with a page break before (as with the Chapter Title style) and apply it as needed. I'm not sure about the style editing capability on the iPad app; that could be my ignorance, though. Best, Marguerite
  14. Click in the text window, choose Edit > Find (command - f), type the current name in the box, click the check box next to Replace, type the new name, click All. Click Done to close the window. Unless you meant in the iPad version? There you enter the find in one box and replace in the other, but you have to search one at a time. It's a feature request, though. Best, Marguerite

  16. Actually I published these two books last year, but they are the only two of my novels that predate my discovery of Storyist. They are more ballet and romance than science fiction (science fiction as imagined by a historian, perhaps?), but if you love dance and don't mind a focus on relationships, Desert Flower and Kingdom of the Shades are for you.   18. chrised, Maybe you could use a combination of bookmarks and comments: one for "fix this first" and the other for "why is this here?" type questions. If you click on the gear menu in the collage, you can also set the color of the index cards. Some people find this helpful for marking cards that need work. Best, M
  19. Hi, Fitch, You could split the screen and display the same text in two ways: outline in the main window where you are working and collage on the right so you can see the comment. Thoth is our big comments guy, but he hasn't posted in a while and still uses an older version of the software. I actually don't use comments much: I stick in bookmarks to mark things I know I want to change (or just where I stopped working on the MS, in case I click away for some reason), but I either keep suggested revisions in a note or enter them right into the text . And I use plot points to outline things if needed, displayed as index cards or an outline, not the manuscript itself. So I can't be too helpful in that regard. I don't remember any feature request for comments showing in the outline. But what shows in the outline is not the text itself but whatever is on the index card for the text, which does not include comments anyway. You could try displaying your manuscript as text in one window and as cards in another and writing your comments directly onto the index cards. Then you would see that text in the outline when you switched to outline mode. Hope that helps. Best, M
  20. Hi, chrised, and welcome to the forums, You can use comments. Click in the text where you want the comment to be, then go to the Edit menu, choose Insert, then Comment. You will see a little yellow sticky note where you can type your comment. If you click on the four squares at top right to get storyboard view (here, the collage, because it is one section with a gray background), you will see an index card representing the scene in the text and the yellow sticky containing your comment. Click on the icon that looks like a sheet of paper with a folded corner to get back to text view. Best, Marguerite
  21. You can set the fonts, sizes, and colors for outline view and index card view, as well as image titles, through the Appearances tab in Preferences. You can also change the body text and header styles for notes through the Inspector or the Format > Styles menu. But if you want to change, say, the summary and other fields in plot, character, and setting sheets displayed as text, no, I don't think that's possible (yet). Best, M
  22. It was in earlier versions of the software. I actually just asked that it be restored, as it was very useful. I think it confused people coming from Scrivener, though. Meanwhile, if you haven't gotten too far into your manuscript (and you are not working on a file imported from Scrivener), you could try searching the Sharing thread for any template from version 2. For example, this one: http://storyist.invisionzone.com/index.php/topic/2314-novel-template-in-helvetica-instead-of-courier/. It should do that automatically. You can change Helvetica to any other font you like within the program. But I hereby formally second this request. Best, M
  23. You're welcome, Arthur. By the way, there is a Page Setup option in the iPad app. You can see it under the Tools (spanner) menu. It just doesn't (yet) include options for the basic CreateSpace sizes. That would be a great feature request. Best, M
  24. Oh, okay. Well, this is not so bad. There are options, but that's probably not the best one. When you say you had the same problem e-mailing the RTF, did your friend just upload that file to CreateSpace? It probably was the same page size, although the bigger problem would be that you're then dependent on CreateSpace's (i.e., a computer's) idea of formatting. You would need to do something first to change the page size, which would require your friend to read the RTF file into Word or OpenOffice for Windows. The best option would be for her to go to CreateSpace and download the .doc template for a 6x9 file, then open the template in Word. I think it comes with instructions. If she doesn't have Word, she can download OpenOffice for free. The process is essentially the same. Follow the instructions if they are in the template. If not, the basic task is to select any text in the template, go to the Insert menu, choose File, then your RTF. Save the file. Go through the file to check it, applying formatting if needed, then save it as a PDF file. On a Mac, you choose Print, then PDF. I assume Windows uses something similar (Print to PDF, I think). The results almost certainly will not be perfect, but the PDF should be the right size. If all this is clear as mud, talk to your friend (to get a sense of how comfortable she is with Word) and write again. I'm signing off for the evening, but I will check tomorrow AM. Best, Marguerite
