Storyist 2.1 is available for download.

Storyist 2.1 adds several Snow Leopard-only features, improves performance when working with large files, and addresses a couple of usability issues. Specifically:

New Features

  • Storyist can optionally auto-correct spelling mistakes as you type. E.g "teh" -> "the". (Snow Leopard only)
  • Storyist can automatically substitute em dashes for two hyphens as you type. (Snow Leopard only)
  • Storyist can automatically replace text with predefined substitutions as you type. E.g. "( c )" -> ©. (Snow Leopard only)
  • The Apply Styles by Matching Text command now also imports styles as necessary so that the resulting manuscript contains the styles as well as the formatting.
  • The Stage Play template now has additional tab- and return-key shortcuts for Act, Scene Header, and Stage Direction.

Performance Enhancements

  • The Apply Styles by Matching Text command is now significantly faster.
  • Pasting large amounts of text from other applications is now much faster.
  • Opening large files is now faster, and on Snow Leopard, significantly faster.

Bug Fixes

  • Storyist now handles corrupt image files more gracefully.
  • Storyist no longer deletes section titles in certain circumstances when the corresponding linked section sheets are deleted from the trash.
  • Emptying the trash when it contains bookmarks no longer causes Storyist to delete the corresponding file in certain circumstances.
  • Comments in headings no longer cause the manuscript to open as an XML file in certain circumstances.
  • The project word count in the inspector now displays the correct word count for the project. In version 2.0.2, it displayed the sum of the project word count and the current session.
  • The "Conflict" field is now available in the section sheet context menus.
  • The internal "Bound Resource" field no longer appears as a field option in the section sheet menus.
  • Tool tip descriptions for certain pages in the Help file no longer display placeholder text.
  • Storyist now properly sets the page margins when the system default page size is something other than US Letter.
  • The Page Setup command again lets you change the manuscript page size.
  • The print settings are now stored with the project.
  • When opening version 1 projects, Storyist no longer shows the missing images icon if the file name of the image contains certain non-ASCII characters.

Other Changes

The license installation process has changed. Starting with version 2.1, writers who purchase Storyist receive a license code (serial number) instead of a license file, and the Trial dialog now accepts these codes. This change allows for the boxed edition to be sold in stores and also, hopefully, will reduce the number of license emails that are flagged by overly aggressive spam filters.

The old license file format is still supported, however. If you need to reinstall your license file, simply drag it to the application. Click the Help button in the Trial dialog for details.
