erwindink
I'm trying to create a book of poetry and the way styles works is limiting my ability to control type layout. One problem is that I want to treat stanzas as paragraphs. Adding soft line breaks seems like a logical way to achieve this. Possible?
Steve
Hi erwindink, Yes. You can enter a soft return using Control+Return. -Steve
erwindink
OK, thanks. But I gotta ask.. why not Shift-Return?
Steve
Hi erwindink, The Control+Return shortcut is the default provided by the Cocoa text system. It works in a number of apps including Text Edit, Notes, and Mail. -Steve
erwindink
OK. Weird. I've been using Macs since 1988 and I never knew this. It seems like I've been using Shift-Return forever. I don't use many Apple apps, though so maybe that's why I never learned this shortcut. Thanks for the info. (I just experimented with Control-Return in some of my writing apps and I get differing results in each of them. It's a shame that things aren't more standardized.) Steve
Hi erwindink, I think Word uses Shift+Return, so you're in good company if that's what you've got "under your fingers." Personally, I think Option+Return is the most logical, since a soft return is the option most people think of when they think of return key options (alternates). -Steve
