Maury
Hi, guys. I thought it would be fun to start a trend about the stupidest things said, thought regarding writing. Here's my first contribution: "I don't read books, because I don't want my style to be influenced by other writers".

Maury
Who said that? Oh, I've been told this over and over by many students throughout the years!
Steve E
Okay. But it's odd that a student (i.e., someone starting to write) wouldn't want to risk improving his or her style. But I suppose that's what makes it "stupid". How about: "Write only what you alone can write." - Elie Wiesel (So we all can only write autobiographies?) "Writing comes more easily if you have something to say." - Sholem Asch (The evidence suggests that blather comes far more easily.) "Writing is an occupation in which you have to keep proving your talent to those who have none." - Jules Renard (More mean spirited than stupid.) -Thoth
